Ripon residents woke up to a jolt Tuesday morning as loud thunder and bright flashes of lightning rolled through the area—despite sweltering temperatures and no rain in the forecast. Social media quickly lit up with confusion and concern: some wondered if the booming sounds could really be thunder, while others shared photos and videos of the dramatic storm. Several posts also pleaded for help finding family pets that had escaped their yards, panicked by the noise. Reports of power outages spread across town as the morning unfolded.
According to the National Weather Service Bay Area, “dry” thunderstorms swept through the Central Valley and parts of the East Bay, bringing less than a tenth of an inch of rain to most spots. The unusual storm sparked several fires—including two in Ripon.
The Ripon Consolidated Fire District called it a “busy morning,” with crews dispatched to two emergencies at once. Firefighters responded to a vegetation fire near the end of Acacia Avenue behind Ripon High School, along the freeway, and to a structure fire at the Modesto Irrigation District substation on the 200 block of Fifth Street, according to their social media.
Fire officials said they prioritized the substation fire due to the severe electrical hazard, staying on scene for over an hour until MID staff confirmed it was safe to suppress. The vegetation fire along Highway 99 was handed over to Manteca City Fire, who extinguished it without further assistance.
Amid the chaos, the Ripon Police Department reported on their social media that their non-emergency phone lines were down during the storm, though 911 lines remained operational. No official cause was given for the phone outage, but it coincided with the lightning and thunderstorm activity.
Nearly 4,800 lightning strikes were recorded in the region between midnight and 5:30 a.m., according to the National Weather Service—a rare and memorable event for Ripon.
