The Ripon Police Department’s Explorer team took first place in the drill category at the 13th Annual Central Valley Explorer Competition, an event that brought together 36 Explorer Posts from California, Nevada, Hawaii, Los Angeles, San Diego, and other regions. The competition, hosted at Sierra High School in Manteca over the weekend, was co-organized by the Ripon, Manteca, Tracy, and Modesto Police Departments.

The Central Valley Explorer Competition is a major event for young people aged 14–21 who are considering a career in law enforcement. Participants put their training to the test in a variety of realistic scenarios, teamwork challenges, and critical thinking exercises. According to the Ripon Police Department, the program aims to help motivated youth develop the skills and confidence needed for a future in law enforcement.

This year’s event also marked a milestone for Detective Michael Perry, who has spent 14 years as an Explorer Advisor with the Ripon Police Department and served as a board member for the competition. The department recognized Detective Perry on social media, noting that this was his final competition before his retirement next year.

“Thank you, Detective Perry, for your commitment to mentoring and inspiring the next generation of law enforcement leaders. Your impact goes far beyond the badge — you've helped shape strong, confident young adults ready to take on the future,” the department wrote.
