In a quiet corner of town, a group of just 10 scouts is making a big impact. Crystal Wright, Committee Chair and CEO, puts it simply: “We are a small but mighty troop.” Troop 414, known for their adventurous spirit, keeps a full calendar—hikes, campouts, backpacking trips, and summer camps are all part of the routine. But with activities like these comes the need for creative fundraising.
Their answer? A Flag Subscription program that's turning heads and bringing neighbors together. For $30 a year, local residents can sign up to have an American flag posted in their yard on Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, and Veterans Day. On each holiday, the scouts rise before dawn, split up the neighborhood route, and carefully place flags at each participating home, finishing with a salute. At sunset, they return to collect the flags—always observing proper flag etiquette.
The initiative began when the troop received a generous flag donation, and now serves 30 homes, with participation growing every holiday. The idea came from the troop’s scoutmaster and connects naturally with the troop’s ongoing service: maintaining flag retirement boxes at local fire stations, a project started by a previous scout.
The Flag Subscription is just one of several fundraising efforts for Troop 414. The scouts also take part in the citywide garage sale and hand out mistletoe during the Christmas season, keeping their program thriving year-round.
