Weston Elementary School has joined an elite group of California schools, earning the coveted Distinguished School status for 2025. The campus is one of just 336 elementary schools across the state to receive this honor.

The recognition comes as part of California's long-running program to celebrate educational excellence, which has been highlighting outstanding schools since 1985. This year's awards focused on two key areas: schools that successfully closed achievement gaps and those showing exceptional overall student performance.

“It is my pleasure to honor and recognize these 336 elementary schools for their efforts to provide exemplary public education to all students. Excellent elementary schools play a critical role in the life outcomes of our young people,” State Superintendent Thurmond said. “This year’s California Distinguished Schools celebration provides us with an opportunity to recognize the hard work of our elementary educators and school staff who help our students discover passions and experiences that will propel them.”

In San Joaquin County, Weston Elementary shares this distinction with four other schools. The Mountain House area saw strong representation, with Bethany Elementary, Julius Cordes Elementary, and Hansen Elementary in Lammersville Joint Unified all making the list. Vinewood Elementary in Lodi Unified rounded out the county's honorees.

The selection process relied heavily on data from the 2024 California School Dashboard, examining both academic achievement and school climate. Schools could qualify through two pathways: demonstrating success in closing achievement gaps or showing exceptional overall performance.

For schools aiming to be recognized for closing achievement gaps, the criteria were rigorous. They needed to serve a student population that was at least 40 percent socioeconomically disadvantaged while showing remarkable progress in either English language arts or mathematics. These schools also had to maintain high standards across multiple metrics, achieving "blue" or "green" status in key areas like attendance and suspension rates.

Schools recognized for exceptional performance demonstrated top-tier achievement in both English language arts and mathematics, while maintaining excellent marks in other critical areas. Importantly, no school could receive this honor if they had "red" or "orange" status in any Dashboard category, ensuring that only the most well-rounded programs were recognized.

The recognition not only celebrates current success but also sets a benchmark for educational excellence in California's public school system. For more detailed information about school performance metrics, the California Department of Education maintains comprehensive data on its Dashboard and System of Support web page.
